Summary: Chapter 7 – Teaching and Distance Education

 

 

 

Quality instruction indicator

 

  • Course: Logical, intuitive, divided into “chunks”, structural but allowing self-pacing

  • Content: Rich, informational

  • Delivery: With multimedia, visually appealing and attractive

  • Method: Easy, quick, and meaningful interaction

  • Revision: constantly critiquing, by designers and instructors

 

 

Teaching the distance learners

 

Aspect of instruction: (Distance learning is more of student-centered)

  • Standard alignment

  • Instructor's level of comfort with a variety of methods

 

Instructional Methods

  • Focus on the learners and incorporate interactivity

  • Match to the types of outcomes defined by the objectives and the assessments to be implemented.

  • Encourage student interaction and create an interesting instructional environment

  • Traditional approaches can be incorporated for synchronous distance learning

  • Strategies like problem-based learning, collaboration and student-led discussions for asynchronous settings.

 

Structuring the course

Responsibilities of instructor

  • Organize the course – students understand how the course will function so that they can be better prepared to participate

  • Use syllabus to ensure communication

  • Create the learning community – by gaining knowledge about each member of the class, the opportunities for communications and collaborations are enhanced

  • Facilitate active learning practices

  • Use instructional materials to assist learning

  • Faculty issues (Labor-management) – clarify distance teaching responsibilities.

Key issues – Class size, compensation, design and development incentives, recognition of intellectual property of faculty, office hour, staff development for teachers, other workload issues.

o Institution: Create guidelines for instructional practice or experience essential for quality teaching at a distance.
